Laser Pointer Green

Are you aiming to be Mr. Superior Geek? Do you want to feel like a Jedi knight? If so then you need to get yourself a laser pointer in green.

Red ones are fine but they are nowhere as bright as the green, in fact it is something like fifty times brighter. Plus everybody who has a laser pointer already probably has a red one.

It seems that red laser light will only appear as a red dot in dark conditions but not so the green, it stands out as a full green beam even in the daylight. The wavelength of the green is 532 nm.and this beats a 650nm red laser hollow.

This means that the green beam is great for pointing out stars and constellations etc. it can be used as a real pointer not just a dot which you could easily lose sight of. This would be especially useful if you were an amateur astronomer.

I know this is basically just a cool dude sort of thing, but there surely is a use for it regarding safety. I am thinking of when people go out walking in hills or mountains or anywhere away from civilization and they get lost. How easy it would be to find them if they had a laser [especially a green one]. It would cut down searches dramatically I would say. Of course you would have to make sure you had plenty of spare batteries to keep the laser pointer working.

The real and original use of these pointers was during lectures in auditoriums. Or perhaps pointing out something on a building or building site.

When you use a laser pointer in this context you are governed by Health and Safety legislation and they restrict usage to models with an output of just 1mW of laser light. Each country has it’s own rules and regulations regarding the use of these laser pointers in a public arena.

green laser pointers are known to produce quite an amount of infrared radiation and this can be quite dangerous to the human eye if viewed without adequate eye protection. However, there are high quality laser pointer which have an IR filter built in. Cheaper green lasers may not have this IR filter because it costs more to include this.

Nowadays people buy them to have fun popping balloons, lighting matches to light cigarettes even safety matches can be lit this way. You could even put on your own laser show if you had different colors.

It is possible to get models which are re-chargeable which is definitely more convenient than constantly having to buy new batteries.

Whilst these laser pointers are fun you should always use your responsibly. You should think of how far the beam carries and if you aimed it at a car driver you would distract him, and obviously the same applies to aiming the beam at an aircraft.

The beam can damage a person’s eyes if directed at them and at the very least distract them from what they were doing. I was reading about a cricketer who had a beam directed at his eyes when attempting a catch – which he dropped! That definitely is not cricket – using a laser beam in that way!!

Check out what is available before you spend your money – there are many cheap models around but they are made from inferior materials and will not last as long. It might be more prudent to spend a bit more and get a product which will last longer.

So – have fun but do not use your laser pointer green, red or whatever color irresponsibly.
